Does your website need a Content Management System?
If you are planning to get your business online and you would like to be in control and make content updates yourself you may want to think about using a Content Management System (CMS) to do this. Moreover, if your business already has some online presence via a traditional website, you may want to think about converting it to use a CMS or adding a CMS component to it so that it becomes an editable website.
What is a Content Management System?
A Content Management System (CMS) is the generic name for programs that make it easier to get content or information onto the internet. Examples of common systems include Wordpress, Joomla and Drupal.
The most attractive aspect of these systems is that they are easy to use. Once the system is installed as your new website or as a component of your existing website, anyone that can use a word processing program like Word can add content to the website.
Why is it good to use a CMS?
As already mentioned, the main reason is that it gives you far more control in your business.
If you want to update information about a product or service you are offering, this can be done in a few minutes. Contrast this to getting information onto a traditional website. You may have to contact your web designer and ask him/her to schedule the update.
They may not have the time or they may be delayed. It could be a few days before the new content is published.
Another factor is the cost. If you can add the content yourself there is no need to pay a web designer to do the update. Using such a system also allows you to get more creative in the type of content you publish and able to do so immediately.
These days most businesses want to have a greater level of control. Being able to communicate more directly and in a more timely manner with their customers and prospects.
For instance, if your business is a store that sells pet supplies, you may want to add content that talks about what is going on in the pet supply industry. If a new cat climbing frame has just come out, you could write about the new design, what is different about it and why cats will love it.
In effect, you are communicating with your customers and prospects and promoting your business. People that are searching for cat climbing frames may find your information online and this may help convince them to buy the climbing frame from your store.
Adding regular fresh content can give your website a bit more character and personality. You can talk about things that interest cat lovers, such as fixing behavioral issues that cats have or taking care of common cat health issues. Creating content like this can make you more trusted in the eyes of your customers and prospects and lead to more sales in your business. What's more, using a CMS means you can do all this yourself rather than relying on a web designer or some other third party to get the word out.
